Scar TissueWhen you were a child, you probably incurred your fair share of bumps, bruises, scrapes and other injuries.  Some of these have healed with no lasting evidence.  Others may have left you with a physical reminder, or a scar, which serves as a reminder of what not to do.  While injuries such as cuts and abrasions can leave you with a visible scar, internal injuries such as sprains and strains can leave scar tissue that is invisible to the eye, but can inhibit your movement when trying to use the affected muscles.  This is due to the fact that when you tear a muscle, rather than creating new muscle to take its place, your body creates scar tissue.

When you have suffered a strain or a sprain leading to scar tissue in muscles or ligaments, it is important to seek prompt treatment in order to regain your full range of motion, strength and flexibility.  In order to keep the amount of scar tissue in your body low, remember to rest the muscle, apply ice and compression to the muscle, elevate the affected area and seek proper medical treatment.  This is known as the RICE treatment for sprains and strains.
